Techboard is pleased to announce that it has partnered with Techknow Invest Roadshow 2016. As part of this partnership Techboard will provide all companies presenting at the Roadshow with a profile on Techboard where content from the Techknow event can be viewed post conference by conference delegates and any investors from Western Australia who were unable to make the trip to the east coast.

The partnership with the TechKnow Invest Roadshow also marks a milestone in Techboard’s mission to become the place for startups and tech companies from all over Australia to get noticed (until now companies needed to have a strong Western Australian connection to be eligible to list). The relationship will also strengthen Techboard’s position as a place to discover intelligence and insights on Australian technology companies and startups.

Today I received notification from Treasury that the Tax Incentives for Innovation Bill had been introduced to Federal Parliament. This was following a submission I made on behalf of Techboard to the recent Treasury consultation on the tax incentives pushing for a number of changes to the approach that had been advocated in the Treasury discussion paper including the removal of a suggestion that the tax incentive only be available to sophisticated investors. I have skim read parts of the Bill and Explanatory Memorandum and am pleased to report that retail investors will be able to access the Tax incentive, with some limitations including a $50,ooo limit on the amount that would be eligible.

We will be looking at the Bill in more detail and will report back soon.

The Western Australian Angel Investors are hosting a healthtech investment education session on the evening of March 31st. The event will take place at the Northbridge Piazza with support from the City of Perth, and is targeting investors who are interested in investing in local health technology ventures.

There is an opportunity for one Techboard startup to take part in the panel session – the panel of esteemed speakers includes Dr Martin Blake (angel investor and Chairman Perth Radiological Clinic and Resonance Health Ltd), Dr Marcus Tan (angel investor and CEO HealthEngine), Kath Giles (investment manager Brandon Capital Partners) and others. This is a fantastic opportunity to raise the profile of your healthtech company within the investment community.

The Students in Startups program aims to facilitate internships for university students in WA startups and help raise the profile of startups as a viable career choice for the next generation of tech talent.  A pilot program is due to commence in February 2016. Any startups that are interested in being involved should send an expression of interest to raf@techboard.com.au by COB Friday 15 2016. Expressions of interest should include a brief description of the Startup’s business, the nature of the role/assignment, the time commitment required (hours per week, remote or on site), and what is on offer to interns (payment, mentorship, etc). There is no fee for taking part.

Today StartupWA released the preliminary report on the startup ecosystem in Western Australia. It is certainly well worth a read and highlights both the extent of the opportunity and challenge for this state from innovation.  It should provide a sound basis for key decisions to support the startup and tech sector.

One thing the Startup WA report does is list 422 Startups, alive and dead.  
Unsurprisingly there is a very strong correlation between startups identified in that report and the 545 startups and technology companies that are listed on Techboard.  We should note that Startup WA’s approach is narrower than the reach of Techboard with the Boundlss report targeting young digital technology firms whereas Techboard does not discriminate on age of the company or technology. From our work on Techboard we know first hand what is involved in putting together such a list, validating, categorising and making calls for whether you feel they should be listed so congratulations go out to the Boundlss team.
