FUNDED August 2022

Welcome to August 2022 edition of FUNDED.  In August we captured the lowest level of funding from announced deals since September 2020, arguably the start of the recent startup funding boom which ran from then until March this year. Private investments in August 2022 totalled $207m from 22 deals, or $213m if you add in six equity crowd-funding deals. This was down 56% from July's $461m and 67% from the $629m we saw in August 2021 back to pre-boom levels which have seen funding in August sitting between $109 and $237m.

Notably this is the first month since January 2021 that we have not captured a mega deal (of over $50m in value), with the largest private investment captured being for Hydrogen cleantech startup Hysata which raised $42.5m led by the Clean Energy Finance Corporation. There was a large drop to the next largest investments, for food supply chain startup Lumachain which raised $28.3m and ethical food startup All G Foods which raised $25m. In all we only captured six private investments that were more than $10m.

Earlier this month we were in Sydney launching Techboard's latest Report on funding women led ventures in conjunction with SBE Australia. That report highlighted the low levels of investment into women led startups, particularly those led solely by women founders who secured 0.73% of all private capital raised in FY22. Over the course of FY22 Techboard captured only $72.9m for solely women led ventures, with the biggest single investment being $10m.  The raise by Lumachain together which what we captured In July brings the total raise by solely women led ventures to around 75% of the total in the whole of FY22.

While on the topic of women led ventures, in our report we included breakdowns of investments made by Australian VCs into Australian Startups by team gender showing on average the VCs that had made more than 10 investments in the period from FY18 to FY22 invested in startups with at least one female founder in 23% of deals.  Since we published the report Carthona Capital have been in touch and alerted us to two investments they made into mixed gender teams, which brings the share of their investments to companies with a female founder to 7.7% as is illustrated below We have also revised the relevant tables in the report accordingly.
