Top 5 ranked WA Fintech Companies

At Fintech Perth‘s December meetup, Techboard Co-Founder Peter van Bruchem announced Western Australia’s 5 top ranked Fintech companies for 2016 taken from Techboard’s 2016 annual ranking. The ranking reflects the combined scores for all Western Australian based or originated Startups tracked in Techboard’s fortnightly rankings that it has been running since September 2015.

The Top 5 West Aussie Sport Startups

Australians have a love affair with sport. It’s a national pastime. But when it comes to combining startups and sport it’s not something you hear about too often. To take this on face value would however be misguided. Because, although the online news publications may focus on the latest SaaS provider, or a new fintech app, there is plenty happening in the sports-tech space in Australia as we have seen at Techboard, with two Sporttech, or more specifically Sharktech startups in the top 10 of our Ranking for 2016, one of which took out our top prizes at Techboard 2016 for the Highest Ranked Unlisted Startup.

As we come into the home straight of 2016 we thought it was therefore only fitting to profile the top five West Aussie startups in the TechBoard 2016 rankings within the sport and recreation category.

Techboard 2016 Ranking Released

Carnegie Wave Energy takes out the top spot on the Techboard ranking for 2016

Following on from its annual showcase of WA's Trending Startups, Techboard 2016, Techboard now releases the full ranking of how WA companies have trended over the 12 months to December 2016.

Carnegie Wave Energy was Techboard's highest trending company for 2016. Carnegie also took out the award for Highest Ranked Listed Company at Techboard's annual celebration of trending startups Techboard 2016. The award reflects the cumulative score of each company over the calendar year. Read more about the Techboard 2016 awards.

The renewable energy company is currently in the process of changing its name to Carnegie Clean Energy, following its acquisition of Energy Made Clean. Carnegie is developing technology that converts ocean swell into zero-emission renewable power and desalinated freshwater. The cleantech has had a big year; as well as its acquisition of EMC, last month it received close to $10m of EU funding for a project off the coast to Cornwall. It's also trialling the world's first renewable microgrid power station using wave energy, on Garden Island.

Techboard 2016 – Congratulations to the winners

screen-shot-2016-12-07-at-5-23-46-pmLast night was Techboard’s night of nights for 2016, the aptly named Techboard 2016 where we celebrated the success of Western Australia’s highest trending startups. A big vote of thanks to everyone concerned, our gracious hosts and venue sponsors BDO, the award sponsors HealthEngine, Eve Investments, Steinepreis Paganin and Techinvest and our long time supporters Beacham Group who kindly video recorded the event.

The Techboard WA Startup Community Award was the first award of the night to be presented. The objective of the award is to acknowledge and celebrate individuals who work to support and improve the WA startup ecosystem. The award was for an an individual who has made an outstanding contribution by  to the local entrepreneurship community.

screen-shot-2016-12-07-at-10-49-36-pmMarcus Tan, founder of Healthengine presented the award sponsored by his company to a very worthy Matt Macfarlane. Matt has been a significant figure in Perth’s startup ecosystem for some years but recently he has been making an enormous contribution largely due to his voluntary mentoring activities through initiatives such as the Curtin University Accelerate program and the Vocus Upstart Accelerator.

Taking out the Highest Ranked Unlisted Startup Award was Shark Shield Pty Ltd, one of an increasing number of sharktech companies emerging in Western Australia. Shark Shield had topped the fortnightly ranking back in June of 2016. The award and a cash prize of $1000 was presented by Ben Rohr from Eve Investments, an ASX listed investment firm. The final award for the night which was for Highest Ranked Listed Tech Company which went to renewable energy stalwart Carnegie Wave Energy who have topped two of Techboard’s fortnightly startup rankings in recent times. Mr John Davidson, the CEO of Energy Made Clean which has only just been acquired by Carnegie accepted the award from Toby Hicks, Partner at Perth-based law firm Steinepreis Paganin who sponsored the award.

Techinvest will also be covering both company winners in its next edition of the magazine which will be out in March 2017.

The top 5 Edtech Startups on Techboard for 2016

Leading up to the big reveal of our highest ranking Startups and Tech Companies for 2016 on 6 December 2016 at Techboard 2016, guest blogger Paul Towers from Startup Soda provided us with an overview of the the highest ranked startups in our edtech category. Each year at Techboard’s Annual Celebration of the highest trending startups and tech companies, this year creatively entitled Techboard 2016, we also like to recognise an individual for their contribution to the Startup Ecosystem. We don’t pick the winner. That is down to you the community. 

The Techboard WA Startup Community Award celebrates an outstanding contribution by an individual to the local entrepreneurship community. The objective of the award is to acknowledge and celebrate individuals who work to support and improve the WA startup ecosystem. Last year the award went to Greg Riebe (from Perth Angels / eGroup).
