A new report released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics found that 3,027 Australians died by suicide in 2015. This is another increase from the 2014 rates of 2,864 which was the highest reported in 10 years.
Key findings include:
For the first time more than 3,000 Australians have died from suicide
Males aged 30-54 are high risk
Females aged 45-49 are high risk
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are twice as likely to die by suicide than non-Indigenous people
Suicide deaths for females aged 15-19 rose
This news follows a recent report Understanding the Exposure and Impact of Suicide in Australia, which demonstrated that the ripple effects of suicide among the community reaches further than previously thought. National Manager of All of Me, Philippa Vojnovic says:
“Despite prevention efforts by some excellent community groups, the suicide rate continues to rise. The trend of young women to die through self-injury is unsettling and shows that we need more early intervention in school settings”.
The report calls for action for the development of a strong National Suicide Prevention Strategy. The response to suicide is a community issue which needs the support and action of federal and state government, community groups, schools and families.
