Funder Overview:
I am the founding CEO of Synchron, the New York based implantable brainâ computer interface (BCI) company pioneering a scalable, endovascular approach to neurotechnology. As a vascular and interventional neurologist, I've dedicated my career to bringing BCI from an academic concept into a first-in-human commercial reality.Synchron, spun out of the University of Melbourne, has raised more than $340 million to date. I secured our Series A in 2015 while completing my junior neuroendovascular fellowship at the Mount Sinai Department of Neurosurgery. Our first product, the Stentrode, is implanted within the superior sagittal sinus and is designed to restore hands-free control of digital devices for people with upper-limb paralysis, preserving independence and communication. My long-term vision for Synchron is to deliver brainâ computer interfaces at global scale and safeguard the fundamental human right of expression.I am a Professor of Medicine at the University of Melbourne, hold more than 150 patents, and have authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications in journals including Nature Biotechnology, Nature Biomedical Engineering, The New England Journal of Medicine, and The Lancet.I also serve on the neurosurgery faculty at Mount Sinai in New York City and have performed over 1,600 neurointerventional procedures, including cerebral aneurysm coiling and endovascular thrombectomy for acute stroke.
