Techboard 2016 – Congratulations to the winners

Last night was Techboard’s night of nights for 2016, the aptly named Techboard 2016 where we celebrated the success of Western Australia’s highest trending startups. A big vote of thanks to everyone concerned, our gracious hosts and venue sponsors BDO, the award sponsors HealthEngine, Eve Investments, Steinepreis Paganin and Techinvest and our long time supporters Beacham Group who kindly video recorded the event.

The Techboard WA Startup Community Award was the first award of the night to be presented. The objective of the award is to acknowledge and celebrate individuals who work to support and improve the WA startup ecosystem. The award was for an an individual who has made an outstanding contribution by to the local entrepreneurship community.

Marcus Tan, founder of Healthengine presented the award sponsored by his company to a very worthy Matt Macfarlane. Matt has been a significant figure in Perth’s startup ecosystem for some years but recently he has been making an enormous contribution largely due to his voluntary mentoring activities through initiatives such as the Curtin University Accelerate program and the Vocus Upstart Accelerator.

Taking out the Highest Ranked Unlisted Startup Award was Shark Shield Pty Ltd, one of an increasing number of sharktech companies emerging in Western Australia. Shark Shield had topped the fortnightly ranking back in June of 2016. The award and a cash prize of $1000 was presented by Ben Rohr from Eve Investments, an ASX listed investment firm. Accepting the award for Shark Shield was Hudson Lyon.

The final award for the night which was for Highest Ranked Listed Tech Company which went to renewable energy stalwart Carnegie Wave Energy who have topped two of Techboard’s fortnightly startup rankings in recent times. Mr John Davidson, the CEO of Energy Made Clean which has only just been acquired by Carnegie accepted the award from Toby Hicks, Partner at Perth-based law firm Steinepreis Paganin who sponsored the award.

Techinvest will also be covering both company winners in its next edition of the magazine which will be out in March 2017.

The top 5 Edtech Startups on Techboard for 2016

Leading up to the big reveal of our highest ranking Startups and Tech Companies for 2016 on 6 December 2016 at Techboard 2016, guest blogger Paul Towers from Startup Soda provided us with an overview of the the highest ranked startups in our edtech category. Over the coming weeks we will be taking a look at other industry categories but next time we will let you know how the companies ranked on Techboard during 2016.

Since the publication of this post the full ranking for 2016 has been released and we have added the edtech companies’ overall 2016 rank below.

Increasing interest, engagement and retention is a key requirement in any learning environment, whether that be at school, university or the workplace. Over the past few years we have seen an explosion in the number of Edtech startups popping up to tackle issues in this area. Ahead of our annual celebration of top trending startups Techboard 2016, Techboard Co-founder and Chief Startup Evangelist Peter van Bruchem talks to Brendon Ross, the founder Paytradie, winner of Last year’s highest trending unlisted startup at Techboard 2015 who took home the prize of $1000 from Eve Investments. Eve Investments is an ASX listed investment company focused on investing in technology start-ups.

Each year at Techboard’s Annual Celebration of the highest trending startups and tech companies, this year creatively entitled Techboard 2016, we also like to recognise an individual for their contribution to the Startup Ecosystem. We don’t pick the winner. That is down to you the community.

The Techboard WA Startup Community Award celebrates an outstanding contribution by an individual to the local entrepreneurship community. The objective of the award is to acknowledge and celebrate individuals who work to support and improve the WA startup ecosystem. Last year the award went to Greg Riebe (from Perth Angels / eGroup).

Ben Sand (muru-D) confirmed for Techboard 2016

We are pleased to announce that Ben Sand, Entrepreneur in Residence from muru-D is going to be guest speaker at Techboard 2016. Ben will be giving the eGroup forum presentation and will be sharing stories from his entrepreneurial journey. Ben is a graduate from Y Combinator, Co-founder of Meta and helped build a holographic computer, raise $23M Series A and build the foundation for the $50M Series B. Ben is also one of the speakers at The Ozapps WestTechFest.

Techboard 2016 is coming up next month as part of the OzApps West Tech Fest on the evening of Tuesday 6 December 2016 and will be brought to you by Techboard and our event partners, the Egroup and sponsored by BDO

The event will include:

eGroup Forum presentation from Ben Sand, Entrepreneur in Residence muru-D;

A panel session on Funding for Australian startups from a Western Australian perspective (more on this session here); and

The Techboard 2016 Awards – a celebration of highest ranking listed and unlisted startups from the combined scores from our Startup Rankings over the last 12 months. As we did last year we will again be having a Community award for an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to Startups in Perth voted on by the startup community.

The ATO’s view of Crowdfunding and Tax

Crowdfunding is gaining huge popularity across the globe. In Australia interest in the various forms of crowdfunding is increasing rapidly. Soon we may catch up with the rest of world which means that our tax and corporate legislation will need to catch up too.

Crowdfunding Legislation

Expectations were high earlier this year as Australia appeared poised to enact legislation to improve the environment for equity sourced crowdfunding. However in the midst of election chaos the Bill lapsed at dissolution in the Senate. At the time there did appear to be broad support to move forward on equity sourced crowdfunding legislation. We should hear more on that later this year.

There has, however, been some progress in tax legislation. The ATO has recently released details on its current view on the tax implications of crowdfunding arrangements with the promise that as the industry expands and new developments arise, they will continue to review and update the information.
