The ATO’s view of Crowdfunding and Tax

This article by Mark Pollock and Sherif Andrawes from our friends BDO and was first published here.

Crowdfunding is gaining huge popularity across the globe. In Australia interest in the various forms of crowdfunding is increasing rapidly.  Soon we may catch up with the rest of world which means that our tax and corporate legislation will need to catch up too.

Crowdfunding Legislation

Expectations were high earlier this year as Australia appeared poised to enact legislation to improve the environment for equity sourced crowdfunding. Win an award that says something about YOU

This week's guest blogger is Charlie Gunningham, CEO of Techboard's major Western Australian distribution partner, Business News. Before working at Business News Charlie founded his own startup Aussiehome.com which Charlie sold to REIWA.

Startup Weekend is on next week, and tickets are selling out fast!

Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.

Startup Weekend takes place at Spacecubed in the CBD on November 4th-6th. The event’s judges have just been announced:

  • Kate Raynes-Goldie is a future oriented thinker, game designer, researcher and innovator. Kate has won multiple international awards for her work, including WAITTA Incite’s Achiever of the Year 2015/2016.
  • Matt Birney became Opposition Leader in WA at age 35, and later founded the Bulls N Bears ASX release distribution platform. Matt was appointed as a director of Perth Racing and the 500 Club and as a director of Cannings Purple, the largest public relations firm in WA.
  • Charlie Gunningham is passionate about innovation, transformation, startups and helping businesses make the most of the power of digital. He cofounded aussiehome.com and is CEO of Business News.
  • Matthew MacFarlane is a venture capital investor and tech entrepreneur. Matthew is cofounder and Director of Yuuwa Capital and on the board of AEGIC, iCetana and Agworld.
