Susanne Bahn from Tap into Safety has penned this open letter to Minister Hastie in response to the front page article WA’s Teen Suicide Crisis in the West Australian today 13th April 2016.

Dear Minister Hastie,

I read with extreme sadness the article on the front page of the West Australian this morning about the teen suicide crisis that is currently occurring in the southern suburbs of Perth. Eight young people in this area of the state have taken their lives since December 2015.

I applaud your efforts in leading a bipartisan delegation of regional leaders and high school children in talks the Prime Minister to seek additional funding for local health and social programs.

Mental health services are stretched to their limit, particularly in areas where population growth exceeds the capacity of available health services. In addition to this, one of the biggest issues is that most services require teenagers to actively self nominate and seek help.

Teens who are suicidal, particularly young males are very unlikely to self nominate to engage with the services that can help them through a crisis situation.

Tap into Safety would like to invite 20 schools to utilize our Wellbeing Awareness & Assessment for Schools (WAA for Schools) Program delivered on site in the high school health lessons free of charge. We have recently redesigned our iPad/desktop application to specifically suit the needs of at risk teenagers to cover some common topics such as social media bullying, substance abuse, self-harm, teen pregnancy and violence. We would also like to offer access to an accredited resilience program as part of our offering to provide services to 20 schools free of charge.

We applaud your steps Minister to support early intervention programs that assist at risk teenagers from getting to crisis point. Supporting the mental health and wellbeing of our youth is paramount to what drives our team and we would like to support yourself and at risk youth with this offer of services.

Yours sincerely,
Dr Susanne Bahn,
Director/CEO Tap into Safety, Pty Ltd
