Techboard Startup Ranking #11
For the period ending 10 February 2016
Listed aerial imagery company Nearmap tops the Techboard ranking this fortnight, having announced strong revenue growth in the last six months of 2015. Its results and on-going expansion into the US market have attracted broad national press coverage, as well as a panel of experts nomination. Speaking to Techboard Nearmap CEO Rob Newman said:
“It is very exciting that a company started in WA is taking on the US and starting to succeed. We still have some work to do, but nearmap is a demonstration that we can do it from WA.”
Nearmap also saw an improvement in its social media engagement scores. In continued improvement of the Techboard scoring system, this fortnight sees the introduction of new social media metrics. Rather than simply looking at vanity metrics such as how many followers or likes an account may have, we are now measuring actual interactions on posts made by the account, which we believe offers a more accurate representation of stakeholder engagement with a particular company.

Avita Medical‘s sale of its respiratory business was also broadly covered in the press, and as a result the regenerative medical company came second in our ranking. The listed company sold the Breath-A-Tech and Funhaler products for $2.5m to Medical Developments International, and aims to now focus on its remaining regenerative medicine and wound care business.
Rounding out the top three is Structural Monitoring Systems which just raised $3.7m through a share placement. SMS is a crack-detection company which services the airline industry, and has seen its share price more than triple over the past year.
Our top-ranked unlisted company is 6Q, an employee engagement and survey startup which has just released new product features including benchmarking. Strong social media engagement and a panel of experts nomination saw it secure fourth spot. Founder Miles Burke commented:
“We’re pleased to be in the top 5, after a fantastic start to the year with both a massive release of new features (hey, we have free trials; sign up and see) and also doubling our monthly revenue from Christmas to now.”
