Welcome to Techboard's latest update on Australian Startup funding news for May 2022. ... we keep track of everything so you don't have to. We have just added 137 completed, open and future funding events to the Techboard Platform, taking us to over 5000 funding events. We have also just broken 5000 published company profiles on the Techboard Directory.
Paying subscribers can use our Funding Event Search Engine to access all of our startup and tech funding data by ten variables.
This month we have captured a total of 137 funding events, 112 of which are completed, with another 34 open or future rounds. We identified 102 unique funders/investors and added 48 new investors to our database taking the total number of funders on the Techboard platform to 1963.
May's funding levels recovered slightly from the amount we captured in April 2021, with Private/VC funding up from $467m to $485m. Significantly, the no of private/VC deals recovered significantly from April, with 71 deals up from the 29 captured in April. Across all funding types we captured $833m from 95 funding events.
While there is undoubtably a slowdown in Private/VC funding from the lofty heights seen in the latter part of 2021 carrying into early 2022, what is happening with private funding right now may be following the trend we have seen in the first half of 2021 where we saw a slowing from February with a recovery in the latter part of H1. This was followed with an upward trend beginning in April and continuing across the rest of 2021 (including some major drops in August and October).
There are a number of factors that may have impacted investor confidence here in Australia, ranging from the War in Ukraine, to the Federal Election to unease in US tech investment. It should however be noted that there is a record amount of dry powder held by Australian Venture capitalists and there does not seem to be a slowing down in those firms building their teams to enable them to make and manage more investments. With any luck (?) will we see a repeat of the trend from the latter part of 2021?
