| Elevator Pitch: | RehabSwift Pty Ltd is a spin-out of the University of Adelaide, headquartered in Adelaide, South Australia. It provides clinicians, physicians, and stroke survivors with a custom-built device to fast track the pathway of movement recovery after stroke. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. Stroke is a leading cause of permanent disability, worldwide. More than 16 million people live with long-term hand disability even after undergoing standard therapy following stroke. The annual medical cost of stroke in Europe, Australia and the USA, is estimated at $100 billion. The technology includes a novel machine learning algorithm that transforms the intention to move into to the actual movement via robotic manipulators. In a proof of principle study, RehabSwift improved the hand motor function of a stroke survivor, who'd had a stroke 3.5 years prior to the study, by 36% only after ten 30-min therapy sessions. |
