Perth start up “veri.vote” have continued to gain momentum and recognition in the tech start up world, being awarded a $5,000 start-up grant at the Curtin University Future Leaders Entrepreneurship Bootcamp by the US Ambassador, John Berry last week.
The judging panel at the boot camp featured the US Ambassador alongside industry heavyweights and venture capital veterans including Bradley Harrison from Scout Ventures in New York, and prolific angel investor Bill Tai.
The start-up pitched was veri.vote: an electronic voting system which is more efficient, secure and transparent than current physical ballot box voting systems. Using block-chain technology (the basis of bitcoin), veri.vote solves many of the problems which electronic voting systems face, including anonymity protection, coercion resistance and corruption.
This is veri.vote’s second accolade in the past month after winning the best award at Startup Weekend Perth in mid-November.
Co-Founder and lead technology developer, Dylan Johnston, pitched the idea at Startup Weekend, emphasizing the potential influence which a voting system could have on the world.
“It’s extremely exciting to see where these ideas and this technology with such amazing potential to transform and strengthen voting systems worldwide could lead us,” Mr Johnston said.
“Our vision is to spread this system all around the world to make elections significantly cheaper and logistically smoother to run, and strengthen the integrity of democracies through providing an uncompromisable and incorruptible system.”
US Ambassador John Berry commented on the fundamental importance of the democratic process to the success of both Australia and America and the amazing potential of the veri.vote system when presenting veri.vote with the award.
With Malcolm Turnbull last week announcing the government’s desire to fuel an “ideas boom” the time could not be riper for start-ups such as veri.vote to quickly catapult to success.
From here the team at veri.vote are looking to gain trials for their revolutionary system and complete all of its planned features, while also looking for potential investors to allow them to continue work smoothly.
