International engineering contractor Laing O’Rourke recently adopted the Roborigger load controlling technology for a 2-week trial to support the Central Station Metro works underway.

Widely recognised for its commitment to disrupt engineering and construction industry with innovation, having been listed in the AFR’s Top 100 Most Innovative Companies 2018 for its engineering innovation Toolbox Spotter, Laing O’Rourke saw immediate value in Roborigger load controlling technology to increase the safety and efficiency of their crane lifting operations.

The Roborigger trial took place at Alfabs Engineering yard in Kurri Kurri, New South Wales, where trial erection of the steelwork that will support the upgrade of Central Station is being undertaken.

Site Engineer for the Central Station Metro project Lachlan McMaster said Roborigger has been a fantastic addition to their operation’s site.
“We’re currently building a modular steel structure and using Roborigger has significantly improved our rigging and installation times”, Lachlan said.

“Roborigger has essentially eliminated the need for a rigger on the ground running after taglines and allows both riggers to be in the elevated work platform (EWP) ready to install.”

“Where we will see the greatest benefit is when we are able to use this kit on site at Central Station. The use of Roborigger will eliminate having a tagline drag across the public spaces during install, and most importantly, allow us to manoeuvre our modules around heritage buildings.”

Laing O’Rourke is also the first company to use Roborigger’s online training to certify its riggers and dogmen as qualified Roborigger operators.

The online learning management system (LMS) was deployed in April to adapt to the interstate travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak, and can now be fully deployed online to equip site personnel with theoretical and practical knowledge to operate the Roborigger system.

About Roborigger:

Roborigger is an automated lifting device which uses gyroscopic and inertial forces to accurately rotate and orient loads. No taglines are needed.Roborigger was conceptualized for applications in construction tower cranes and onshore cranes, where there is an average of three fatalities every year in Australia and many more injuries and near misses due to people being in the vicinity of crane loads. Roborigger also includes a camera, load cell, and internet connectivity so all loads are immediately recorded and logged on the internet.Roborigger is ideal for shorebase loadout operations, as it improves safety, reduces the number of personnel required and logs all logistics movements.
