An Australian mining tech startup which ran the world’s first online competition for an operational mining problem has launched a suite of mining ‘expert apps’ as its next step in solving big geospatial data challenges.
GlassTerra’s three tailor-built apps are designed to provide people and machines in the mining industry with easy access to big geospatial data at any location it is needed.
CEO Christian Larsen said there was a general frustration with systems for handling geology and mining geospatial data across the global mining industry.
“There are over 100 different formats and a multitude of systems for managing and creating geospatial data, which creates inefficiencies and extremely high operating costs,” Mr Larsen said.
“We love it when big geospatial data works for our users, not the other way around. We see too many people spending serious chunks of their life working for the data. To turn this around we’re building intuitive products that enable big geospatial data to be easily used.”
The three apps are:
• GlassShowcase - Show the world your geological models, Governments, mine asset owners and consultants can share their models with online visitors.
• GlassData - Secure sharing & collaboration for mining professionals working with geospatial data.
• GlassPlugin - Add GlassTerra’s 3D geospatial data viewing functionality into your own software or web application.
After running the successful ‘Ore-X’ online competition in 2015 with mining giant Gold Fields and mining tech accelerator Unearthed to accurately classify gold ore in an underground mine, GlassTerra’s team has been busy developing tech solutions for use with on-site mining operators and geospatial data teams.
GlassTerra’s team members have extensive first-hand experience in the frustrations of working with geospatial data for global mining companies. These experiences lead them to build their own software to process and retrieve the massive amounts of geospatial data generated on mining sites, convert it into useful formats and visualise it with 3D geospatial datasets.
“We’ve baked in our own mining expertise with these apps, to help on-site teams and geologists to do their jobs faster and more efficiently.”
“We believe in co-creation as the fastest way to create value for customers. Our products are created with our customers and collaborators. There are many more expert apps in the pipeline and one day we’d love to see big geospatial data seamlessly working for people, AI and companies in mining,” Mr Larsen concluded.
