Covocate co-founder and Director Les Delaforce, a Gumbaynggirr man from NSW, has been featured in the 100 Days of Deadly (Day 52), an initiative to highlight the positive work of 100 Aboriginal leaders in Western Australia.

Speaking about his experience as an Aboriginal person, Les spoke about engaging people of diverse backgrounds into meaningful employment and using technology to achieve this.

“Indigenous people are underrepresented when it comes to tertiary qualifications, with only 14% having a qualification, compared to 46% of non-Indigenous people, this is despite having extensive and relevant experience and skills”.

Les said the opportunities created by tech are two fold – creating new opportunities for Indigenous people and challenging current approaches to recruitment.

“I’ve always had a passion for how culture, technology and business can come together to create opportunities.

Largely this is about challenging the status quo, we need to do things differently in order to achieve a different outcome”.

In 2015 Les teamed up with some friends with a keen interest to change the status quo of recruiting and launched their own startup, Covocate.com.

“The four of us come from very different and diverse backgrounds.

“We’ve developed technology that levels the playing field in recruitment. It’s about looking at people’s values and attitudes, not just their qualifications or documents”.
