Shark Shield is urging governments to implement an innovative technology solution to solve the serious shark problem in Australia. Statistically, shark attacks will continue to increase as our population rises along with our increased passion for the ocean. As a result, our country will continue to be branded as the shark attack capital of the world. Now is the time to change this. Shark Shield proposes world first innovation to re-brand Australia as having the safest beaches in the world.

Shark Shield CEO, Lindsay Lyon, addressed the Committee this afternoon at the Senate Inquiry into Shark Mitigation and Deterrent Measures. Lyon questioned why Australian governments have not moved forward with Shark Shield to implement its new Ocean Guardian beach barrier solution, stating this is scientifically proven technology, it is not science fiction.

Lyon said, “We are amazed given the lives lost and community economic damage from shark attacks as to why there has been no interest in commissioning a pilot or test site for Ocean Guardian. It is based on scientifically proven deterrent technology that has been on the market for twenty years. The electromagnetic transducer has also been used in the medial industry with clinical studies showing it is safe for humans and animals.”

Tourism in Australia is a critical component of the Australian economy. In the financial year 2014/15, tourism represented 3.0% of Australia's GDP contributing A$47.5 billion to the national economy. Domestic tourism is a significant part of the tourism industry, representing 73% of the total direct tourism GDP.

“If our brand as the global shark attack capital of the world affected only 1% of the tourism, the Australian economy is losing $475,000,000 of income annually as a result. This excludes how the world views our environmental track record on managing and / or destroying our oceans,” said Lyon.

Shark Shield is seeking the government to move forward with placing an order to implement its new Ocean Guardian beach barrier solution. A significant breakthrough in long-range shark mitigation system, Ocean Guardian has the ability to deter sharks at up to 50 metres (100-metre diameter). This is the ultimate solution; creating a beach barrier to replace shark nets and drum lines, protecting surfers and swimmers alike.

With a positive environmental impact on marine life, Ocean Guardian will not only reduce the number of sharks killed annually in nets and drum lines, but also protect other marine life such as turtles, whales, seals and dolphins killed or injured using existing shark mitigation approaches.

“Shark Shield is building the new Ocean Guardian products for the luxury yacht and commercial markets. At this point in time we are not progressing with solutions for the beach barrier community protection, as there clearly appears to be no commercial interest in a solution to protect beaches and the environment,” said Lyon.

The Western Australia government has taken a globally leading position by offering consumer rebates on proven shark deterrents such as Shark Shield for personal protection. Last week, Shark Shield products were also used on the jet skis at the surfing competition in South Africa, which retrieved Mick Fanning from the water.

“It’s very perplexing as to why other governments have not moved forward with this strategy. The federal government talks about innovation and yet the world’s leading technology company in shark mitigation, the Tesla of our space, has received no interest from any Australian government body.

“Shark Shield has delivered a global habitat changing technology; this is a significant opportunity for Australia to lead the world in shark human management and ocean conservation. We would hope that both State and Federal Governments would be interested in implementing this solution yesterday.

“We have this opportunity of re-branding Australia as having the safest beaches in the world,” concludes Lyon.

Shark Shield’s products have been consistently proven to effectively turn sharks away by the world’s leading scientific experts on sharks. Independent research and testing by universities has resulted in a number of peer reviewed science journals confirming the technologies effectiveness. The technology and patents have a twenty-year development history, in partnership with organisations such as the world’s leading experts in White Sharks, the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board in South Africa..

In 2017 the company announce the technology breakthrough of a new long range shark deterrent called Ocean Guardian, utilizing a patented Metamaterial Electromagnetic Transducer, with expectations of repelling sharks within a 100-meter diameter of each unit installed. The Ocean Guardian has been developed in partnership with leading physicists and biologists. This long-range shark deterrent solution will not only protect beach goers as a beach barrier, aquaculture, yachting, etc. but significantly reduce the environmental impacts caused by using shark nets, drum lines and culling.

Shark Shield devices directly support the conservation of sharks by removing the need for culling or other lethal means of managing human and shark interactions. Shark Shield devices have no know long term effects on sharks, and do not affect other ocean creatures. The new Ocean Guardian transducer is based on technology used to treat patients in the medical field including, oncology, urology and other chronic diseases, with clinical studies demonstrating that the electromagnetic field does not affect the health of humans or ocean life, such as sharks or dolphins.

Shark Shield is trusted by professional adventurers around the world, including navies, military and police divers, and is mandated safety equipment in many industries. If you’re serious about adventure, you wear a Shark Shield.
