Astron is pleased to have received an extremely postive response to the announcement of its automated shark detection system, Sentinel VDS, with recent articles in the Sunday Times, Perth Now and the Augusta Margaret River Times.
Sentinel VDS is a world leading automated shark detection system built on the back of class leading drone technology and highly sophisticated detection software. Sentinel VDS uses drone technology to capture live video footage and detection software to warn beach users of lurking sharks.
Astron's Technical Director Julian Kruger said that he wanted to create a system that avoided the need to hunt and kill sharks.
“All of the research being conducted tells us that shark attacks are on the rise due to increasing numbers of people entering the water,” he said.
“We’re using smart optics and computer vision technology to enhance the rate of detection so human error can be avoided.”
Astron scientist Mehdi Ravanbakhsh said the jet-shaped drone would be able to function along most coasts.
He says it could be used for events such as surf carnivals and the Margaret River Pro.
Further aerial trials of the system will be undertaken in May at Shark Bay, in the Gascoyne region.
Astron hopes to partner with the State Government or local surf clubs to further develop the product.
