Brent and Clinton attended the ‘Urban Planning Mini-Hackathon: Hack The Streets‘ presented by the Planning Institute of Australia, Landgate and Hassell, on Thursday 1st September.

The Hackathon focused on how technology and data can help address some of the most challenging issues cities are facing today. It was an opportunity for planners, data specialists and app developers in Western Australia to come together to develop great, innovative ideas.
The vision of these ideas is to make town planning and urban design simpler, interactive and more clear to the general public, enticing them to be more engaged in the complex issues of city planning in order to generate better communities.

“One of the best parts of the night was hearing so many amazing ideas from both private sector and industry about the impact of utilising various technologies to better plan the places we live in,” said Brent.

“No idea was too stupid.”

Being a cutting edge online visitor analytics platform, Trendwise was top of mind in this space.

Brent and Clinton joined a line up of special guests, scribes and facilitators from Landgate, Hassell, UWA, City of Vincent, Hall and Prior and Arup.

Four key projects; Plan to be healthy, Fix the bias, Data led design and The Tsunami of ageing were hacked by all attendees over the course of the night with some fantastic ideas being generated from them.

“The most enjoyable part for me was learning about participant’s unique backgrounds and experiences, and seeing how they approached the same problem statements from a different perspective,” said Clinton.

“An excellent way to achieve great outcomes.”

Brent presented an overview of Trendwise and how it can be used/how it is used in current and future planning projects, the benefits of big data in urban planning and design and how having access to a range of insightful information can lead to better outcomes.

All ideas discussed throughout the night were presented at the Planning Institute of Australia’s conference the next day.

One of the key highlights for both Brent and Clinton was planting the seed to the attendees around Trendwise and the benefits of our analytics, then seeing the individual teams take that on board and use that to create a range of different idea’s and projects over the course of the night.

“What I hope to see from here is the next generation of planners coming through and being smarter an more innovative in this space,” said Brent.
