CourseGenius CEO Sarah Mateljan shared her business journey, her greatest achievements and her tips for entrepreneurial success at the sixth annual Inspiring Entrepreneurship luncheon on Friday 9 June 2017 at Perth’s Parmelia Hilton. Sarah was joined by Amanda Healy from Kirrikin and April Jorgensen from Niche Education Group for a lively panel discussion and the event was MC’d by Grace Mugabe of Financially Empowered.

The annual event, organised by the Department of Local Government and Communities, celebrates and recognises women in business and enterprise. This year’s event focussed on three women whose businesses have a strong philanthropic aspect.

Technology expands reach of education

CourseGenius CEO Sarah told the audience about her passion for about using technology to help solve problems and in particular, how we can use technology to help improve access to education and training. She spoke about her own business journey, which included bringing the CourseGenius platform to Afghanistan in 2013 to help an international NGO expand the reach of their adult education and training programs.

Sarah also spoke about her involvement in local programs for fellow entrepreneurs. This included being a mentor with the Founder Institute, a program that helps people turn their ideas into real businesses and taking part in the Springboard Australia Accelerator program for fast-growing female-led tech companies.

Tips for entrepreneurs

Sarah concluded her talk by sharing her tips to help fellow entrepreneurs on their business journeys.

“Firstly, you need to back yourself,” Sarah said. “If you think you’ve got a good idea - then follow through on it and believe in your own ability to make it a success.

“The second thing is to find people to join you on the journey. They might be co-founders, or mentors, or friends - but whoever they are make sure they are positive and will help you to keep going when things get tough.

“Finally I’d say don’t be deterred by setbacks. No matter how prepared or much of a perfectionist you are, they will happen. It’s how you deal with them that counts. Don’t waste time beating yourself up - work the problem and find a way forward.”

Minister celebrates women in business

Women’s Interests Minister Simone McGurk said the event was a snapshot of talent which highlights the diversity that exists among female small business owners in WA.

"Celebrating the achievements of women who have become successful entrepreneurs will inspire others to consider taking a similar path and hopefully provide them with the next steps to make their dream a reality,” the Minister said.

"It is part of the wider vision for gender equity across our State, with events such as this expanding the capacity of women to make genuine choices about their lives through full and equal participation in the workforce."
