The new data out of WorkSafe WA shows that workplace fatalities in 2014-15 have returned to that of 5 years ago. Agriculture, fishing and forestry are the worst offenders with 16.3 workers in every 100,000 killed at work. This is compared to mining who had 2.2 fatalities for every 100,000 workers.

Worksafe’s State of the Work Environment report noted the three main fatality risks were being hit by falling (overhead loads and tools) and moving objects (interaction between people and plant) and vehicle incidents.

The Department of Mines and Petroleum analysed mining deaths and found that 62% were as a result of workers failing to follow procedure. 44% of these fatalities occurred under supervisors who had less than a year in the role.

So how do we reverse this again back on the road to a reduction in workplace fatalities?

It’s simple… training. But not just any type of training. Interactive training is the key. Training that has an emotional connection. Training that requires decision making. Training that is engaging and competitive. Training that uses gaming. Training that incorporates all the learning contained in the procedures. Training that specifically focuses on Supervisors.

Training that keeps workers on-site and out of the classroom is just as important. Because as we know that traditional classroom delivery results in a 90% loss of knowledge after the first month. How can we change behaviour if we don’t remember what we were taught! Instead, train at the work station, at the tool box meeting and at the pre-start. This methodology has been proven by university research to work and reduce injuries by more than 10%.

Time for a change? Definitely!!
